The recently inaugurated Judicial Commission of Inquiry is set to commence its formal proceedings.
The commission, led by Hon. Justice I. R. Minakiri, was established by the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, in response to the violent attacks that occurred on Monday, 7th October 2024.
Its main objective is to probe the tragic incidents of arson, killings, and destruction of property at several Local Government Council Headquarters in the oil-rich state.
In light of this, the commission urged all affected persons, civil society groups, organizations, and members of the public to submit memoranda detailing their experiences, observations, and recommendations.
The submission of memoranda is an important step toward understanding the root causes of the violence, the extent of the damage, and those responsible for the attacks.
The terms of reference for the commission include, identifying the individuals or groups involved, evaluating the damage and loss of life, and assessing whether the violence was politically motivated.
Additionally, the commission is tasked with examining the response of security agencies, recommending compensation for victims, and proposing long-term measures to prevent future incidents.
