Joyful Reunion as Esan and Kalabari Communities Celebrate Union After 27 Years

Port Harcourt came alive as the Esan and Kalabari communities reunited after nearly three decades for a grand traditional marriage ceremony that brought together the families of Iyamabo and Datubo.

The event showcased a colourful blend of culture, tradition and family ties as Fred Iyamabo and Victoria Datubo were formally joined in marriage. The ceremony featured the timeless Igbe Finji (box opening), during which the bride’s family inspected the items brought by the groom, followed by the symbolic Bibi Fe (buying of the mouth), where both families exchanged and tasted an array of rich Kalabari delicacies.

In keeping with tradition, the bride wore a solemn expression, only revealing her smile once all requirements of the marriage had been fulfilled. Victoria’s bright smile drew cheers from her family, marking the official seal of approval for the union.

Chairman of the occasion, Prince Tonye T.J.T Princewill, described the marriage as a significant moment for both communities, noting that such unions strengthen cultural ties at a time when they are needed most. He recalled that 27 years earlier, he and his family had visited Benin for a similar ceremony when he married his wife, Rosemary. Fred and Victoria would later meet in his London home, a connection he said none of them could have predicted.

Victoria, also known as Sandisco, a name given to her by the late King, possibly in recognition of her graceful dance, shares family ties with Prince Princewill.

After the traditional rites were completed, guests were entertained with live cultural performances, prayers led by Deacon George Betts and the cutting of the wedding cake. The bride’s family was represented by her older sister, Mrs Eva Dagogo Princewill, and her brothers Eddy, Will and Henry Datubo. On the groom’s side, the family was led by Mrs Flora Iyamabo, joined by his siblings Caroline Ademiluyi, Elizabeth Uwaifo, Rita Odutola, Florence Iyamabo, Rosemary Princewill, Regina Jemide and Victor Iyamabo.

With Barr Adaye Duke and Chief Daogigo Amachree anchoring the event, guests celebrated late into the night, enjoying music, dance and a spread of beloved local dishes including boli and fish.
