A non-governmental organization, Foundation for Accuracy, Integrity and Respect (FAIR), marched the streets of Port Harcourt today, August 19, 2025 to campaign for good governance in Nigeria.

The Executive Director of FAIR, Hon. Onyeche Wofurum Igwe, told journalists that the NGO, a non-partisan watchdog and non-profit making association that advocates for good governance in Nigeria, have been registered with the CAC.

He noted that good governance in Nigeria is a critical aspect of the country’s development and stability which involves the effective management of resources, accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.

He added: “The concept of good governance is essential for fostering an environment where citizens can thrive economically, socially, and politically.”

“Good governance is vital for Nigeria’s progress. It ensures that decisions are made in the best interest of the citizens, promotes accountability among leaders, and fosters an environment conducive to economic growth and development. Without good governance, achieving sustainable development and stability becomes challenging.”

He emphasized that Nigeria faces several challenges to achieving good governance, adding that these include corruption, lack of transparency in government dealings, inadequate accountability mechanisms, and inefficiencies in public service delivery.

Hon. Igwe stressed that corruption, in particular, has been a significant impediment to good governance and development in the country.

He said: “Despite the challenges, there have been efforts towards improving governance in Nigeria. Recent administrations have initiated reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in governance. For example, the Tinubu administration has implemented economic reforms to boost the economy and reduce dependency on oil revenues.”

“Strong institutions are the backbone of good governance. In Nigeria, institutions such as the judiciary, the legislature, and anti-corruption agencies play crucial roles in ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law. Strengthening these institutions is essential for achieving good governance.”

“Transparency and accountability are key pillars of good governance. In Nigeria, enhancing transparency in government transactions and ensuring accountability among public officials can help reduce corruption and improve public trust in government. Mechanisms for ensuring accountability include robust audit systems and free media.”

“Citizen participation is essential for good governance. In Nigeria, involving citizens in decision-making processes can lead to more responsive governance and policies that reflect the needs of the people. Encouraging civic engagement and ensuring freedom of expression are vital for participatory governance.”

One of FAIR’s Directors, Peace Owhor-Ogunleye, a public health specialist and child protection investigator for the State of Texas in the United States, stated that good governance has significant economic implications, adding that effective governance can lead to better management of resources, attraction of investments, and creation of an environment conducive to business growth. She also said that in Nigeria, good governance can help diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil.

She noted: “Security is a critical aspect of governance in Nigeria. Good governance involves ensuring the safety and security of citizens. Addressing issues of insecurity through effective governance mechanisms can lead to a more stable environment for economic activities and development.”

“Good governance is crucial for Nigeria’s development. Addressing challenges such as corruption, enhancing transparency and accountability, strengthening institutions, and encouraging citizen participation are essential steps towards achieving good governance. With effective governance, Nigeria can better harness its resources and potential for the benefit of all citizens,” Owhor-Ogunleye concluded.
