Russia has called on the United States to immediately release Venezuela’s President, Nicolás Maduro, following his arrest by American forces.
In an official statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry described Maduro as the legitimate leader of a sovereign nation and said his detention violates international law and basic principles of state sovereignty.
Moscow warned that the situation could further destabilise global relations and escalate tensions between major world powers if not handled through diplomacy.
Russian officials urged Washington to abandon what they described as the use of force and resolve the crisis through dialogue, adding that continued detention of the Venezuelan leader could have serious consequences.
The statement has drawn close attention in Washington and other global capitals as rivalry between major powers intensifies over the unfolding Venezuela crisis.
Russia’s position adds to growing international pressure on the United States, following similar calls from China, the United Nations and the African Union, all urging restraint and respect for international law.
The US government has not yet issued an official response to Russia’s demand.
